Finding the Right Age Group for Your Player

Working out where a player fits is the first hurdle for most families, especially when a child sits between age groups or is coming back to the game after a few years off. At Marlin Coast Rangers Football Club, our football teams in Cairns run in a continuous line, so there's no point where a player ages out and has nowhere to go. Mini Rangers covers the first touches at three to five. MiniRoos takes it from U6 to U12. From U13 the pathway splits between junior competitive and FQPL squads, then carries on through Youth U18, U23 and senior grades. If you already know the age group, head straight to registration. If you don't, email us at secretarymcrfc@gmail.com and we'll point you the right way.

Our Playing Groups

Our teams are grouped by age and by the level of competition each player is ready for.

  1. Mini Rangers and MiniRoos (ages 3 to 12): small-sided football built around touches on the ball rather than results. Parents stay close to the action, and plenty end up helping run the sessions.

  2. Junior competitive, U13 and U14: a step up in structure for players ready for graded, competitive football. Training becomes more regular and positions start to settle.

  3. FQPL squads, U13/14 through Youth U18: our pathway into Football Queensland's premier competition, with places decided on ability. Players train to a higher standard and travel for fixtures.

  4. U23 and senior grades: FQPL U23 men's and women's teams alongside Premier Men's, Premier Women's and Men's Divisions 1 and 2. There's a level here whether someone is chasing promotion or just wants a regular game.

FAQs

Most clubs open their first programs at around three to five years old, where sessions focus on coordination and having fun with a ball. Structured, small-sided matches usually begin from about U6.

MiniRoos is non-competitive and played on smaller pitches with modified rules, so every player gets plenty of involvement. Competitive junior football from U13 introduces graded teams, full-sized formats and results that count towards a ladder.

FQPL squads are selected on ability, so trials are the normal entry point rather than open registration. Players who aren't selected can still play junior competitive or community grades at the same age level.
